Tech review: Great gift ideas for dad

Father’s Day is coming up, and I’ve been testing a few things that dads would love.

You could get dad another tie or bottle of after shave, but he’s probably got too many ties, and how much aftershave does one man need?

Here are three suggestions to surprise your dad.

Arcade belt

Belts were an area of my wardrobe that I knew could be better. I’ve tried all kinds of belts, and I’ve found belts from Arcade to be the most comfortable I’ve come across.

I’ve been wearing an Arcade belt called Hardware ($39.95, arcadebelts.com).

The Hardware belt is a stretchy web material that’s 1.5 inches wide. It comes in four colors: Iron (black), Coyote (kakhi), Mud (brown) and Olive (green).

The buckle is black plastic, and it closes with a very satisfying click. The way the buckles fastens is very secure, yet easy to undo with a squeeze on the top and bottom.

The belt comes in two lengths. Regular fits waists up to 40 inches, and long measures 52 inches. You pull on the end of the belt to adjust the fit, and once you have the right length, you can just click it and forget it.

Because there’s no metal at all, it’s airport friendly. Arcade sent the Iron one for me to review. After a few days, I ordered one in Coyote.

Because it’s not leather or metal, I’d consider these more casual than dressy.

Pillow Cube Travel Pillow

I’m a side sleeper, and most pillows just are not tall enough to support my head when I sleep. I also like to sleep with a pillow between my knees.

I’ve known of Pillow Cube for a few years, and they recently sent over their Travel Pillow, which I’ve been using for a few weeks.

If you’re not familiar with Pillow Cube, they are appropriately named. Their pillows are perfect rectangles with squared-off corners and sides.

They’re made of a proprietary foam called AeroPluff. They’re appropriately firm and not at all too cushy.

The original Pillow Cube ($69.99, pillowcube.com) is called the Side Cube. It measures 12 inches by 24 inches, and it is 5 inches thick.

The Travel Cube ($69.99) measures 12 inches by 16 inches and it is also 5 inches thick.

The Travel Cube also comes in a bundle with a travel bag ($79.99) that compresses the pillow down for easier packing in your suitcase. The bag is cylinder-shaped, so to use it, you roll up the pillow and then put it in the bag and keep pressing out air until the foam is collapsed and then clip the bag shut.

When you let the pillow out of the bag it’ll expand back to its normal size in about 20 minutes. The Travel Cube comes with a very comfy cover made of polyester and spandex. The cover zips off for easy laundering. It feels soft, like a velour, so you may want to put the Travel Cube in your own pillow case.

It kept my neck supported nicely and even worked well between my old knees.

Pillow Cube also makes cooling pillows, kid pillows and mattresses. I’ve included the list pricing. Watch for sales.

Ekster Tech Case

I didn’t know I needed a tech case until I tried one.

You might guess that I travel with a lot of technology. When my wife and I pack up for a trip, we go with two laptops, an iPad, probably a Bluetooth speaker and chargers for both our laptops and our two phones. I also wear an Apple watch and have AirPods or whatever earbuds I’m currently using.

My backpack has enough pockets for all the stuff we carry, but with so many compartments and all those zippers, it was hard for me to keep things organized.

A tech case is like a shaving kit for all the small things you carry when you travel.

The Ekster Tech Case ($75, ekster.com) has plenty of small mesh pocket and elastic cable straps to keep your small items organized and in place. It zips open fully so you can spread it out to access everything easily.

The case is made from 400D recycled polyester with high-density foam to pad the contents. It is water resistant and TSA approved.

It is the right size to neatly store all your cables, chargers, batteries and other small electronics and accessories.
