CHICAGO — A Cook County judge on Saturday ordered pretrial detention for a convicted felon connected to the fatal shooting of Chicago police Officer Krystal Rivera in the Chatham neighborhood earlier this month.

Jaylin Arnold, 27, of the 8000 block of South Kimbark Avenue, was the second man charged with a crime concerning Rivera’s death, though no one has yet been charged directly with murder. He was charged with one felony count of armed violence, three counts of possession of a firearm by a repeat felon and possession of a controlled substance, authorities said. Arnold also had an arrest warrant in his name, police said.

An earlier investigation surrounding the fatal shooting of Officer Krystal Rivera on June 5 in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue determined Arnold was involved in events that led to Rivera’s death, which was found to be caused by friendly gunfire.

Before Judge John Hock at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, prosecutors said that leading up to Rivera’s shooting, Arnold could be seen on video surveillance with firearms, narcotics and an extended magazine in his waistband, according to court records.

Arnold, who has an extensive criminal record, was on parole in separate cases at the time of Rivera’s death, which include a conviction for unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Hock approved the prosecution’s request for detention, citing his criminal background and agreeing he was a threat to the community. He also approved a request by the defense to preserve video footage from the Drexel Avenue apartment building where Rivera was killed.

Arnold was taken into police custody last Thursday morning by the police and the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task in the 7500 block of South Vernon Avenue. Authorities said he was carrying several bags of crack cocaine for sale.

Arnold will return to court on Thursday.
