Yosemite worker dies in fall while rock climbing in park, officials say

A hospitality worker in Yosemite National Park suffered a fatal fall while rock climbing in the park, officials said.

The employee was “off the clock and engaging in recreational activities during their free time,” an Aramark Corp. spokesperson told McClatchy News in an email on Wednesday. Aramark is the parent company of Yosemite Hospitality, where the employee worked.

The spokesperson did not provide further details, including the date of the accident, the identity of the employee or how long they had worked in the park.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic climbing accident,” the statement said. “Our sympathies are with the family and friends at this difficult time.”

The National Park Service did not respond to McClatchy News’ request for information on June 25.

In a statement to SFGATE, the agency said the accident happened recently.

“The National Park Service is aware of the recent incident which led to the death of a concession employee in Yosemite National Park,” the statement said, according to the news outlet. “The incident is currently under investigation and no further information is available.”

The accident was first reported by the Mariposa Gazette, a local newspaper, on June 19.
