ORLANDO, Fla. — A police officer accidentally fired a rifle during a Wednesday lockdown at Lake Nona Middle School, according to the Orlando Police Department.
OPD and other partner agencies responded to the school around 5 p.m., two hours after dismissal, following a 911 call that there was possibly an armed person on campus. Officers conducted a thorough search of the campus but no such person was located, the agency said in a news release later that day.
However, during the search an OPD officer accidentally fired a rifle, though no one was injured. That officer is undergoing additional training and an internal investigation was launched as per department policy, according to a second OPD news release issued Thursday.
The investigation into the lockdown remains ongoing and detectives are reviewing all available video and other information, the Thursday release said.
OPD did not respond to requests for comment about media reports that the lockdown was the result of a prank.
