Baby food recalled in 49 states, Puerto Rico and Guam for too much of a toxin

MIAMI – One lot of baby food has been recalled after testing found elevated levels of patulin, a toxin that can cause health problems such as “immune suppression, nerve damage, headache, fever, and nausea.”
That’s from Initiative Foods’ FDA-posted recall notice about Tippy Toes Apple Pear Banana fruit puree, which said the baby food went to every U.S. state except Alaska and might have also gone to Puerto Rico and Guam. The patulin problem, Initiative said, was found by the FDA’s Total Diet Study testing.
“Patulin is a mycotoxin mainly found in rotting apples and is produced by mold fungi of the aspergillus and penicillium speciesm,” food analysis company R-Biopharm said. “The presence of patulin in apple products is often used as an indicator of the quality of the apples used in food production.”
Recalled puree comes in two-packs of 4-ounce cups, lot No. 07174 with a best by date of July, 17, 2026. Return recalled puree to the store for a full refund, or at least toss it into the garbage. Direct any questions about this recall to 855-2150-5730, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern time.
Along with its own brands, of which Tippy Toes is one, Initiative Foods, based in Sanger, California, a Fresno suburb, makes baby food for the store brands of Food Lion, Meijer, Albertsons, Safeway and other customers.
