WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump expressed frustration with his Supreme Court picks, complaining about votes against his policies and lamenting what he said was a lack of loyalty.

Asked in a Time Magazine interview if he regrets nominating Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, Trump said, “Yeah. What can I do? I put them in. They voted against me too often. I was very — I gave them the position of a lifetime, and they vote against me often.”

The president contrasted them with Democratic-appointed justices, who he said “stick like glue.”

“You can come up with the worst thing in the world and they’ll vote as a group. And while I don’t like it, there’s something I admire about it: there’s loyalty,” he said.

Asked if he wants loyalty from his Supreme Court appointees, Trump replied, “I do like loyalty, yeah” before adding, “No, I don’t want loyalty. I want good decisions.”

The president has expressed anger with many of the court’s decisions during his second term, including rulings against the sweeping tariffs he enacted in the first months of his administration. Last month, the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s effort to reshape mail-in voting, prompting him to complain that the justices he named were “merely a shell of their former selves.”

Still, the court has allowed other Trump policies to continue.
