System forecast to bring flooding, winds, high surf to US East Coast this week

A low-pressure area is expected to form within hours that is forecast to bring high winds, coastal flooding and dangerous surf along portions of the U.S. East Coast this week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The center of the low is expected to impact North Carolina and Virginia, with effects stretching up to coastal New Jersey and down to Florida.

“Impacts will extend well to the south, including along the Florida Atlantic coast, with heavy surf posing strong rip current risks for swimmers,” AccuWeather reported.

The non-tropical system could take on some subtropical characteristics as it moves “slowly and erratically through the middle of next week,” the hurricane center said in its latest advisory.

The National Hurricane Center on Sunday gave the low a 30% chance of tropical development over the next seven days.

“Another notable element is that with these forecast positions of low pressure, sitting over generally warm water off the East Coast, you’re lobbing the potential for a ‘warm core’ or tropical system to develop,” Houston-based meteorologist Matt Lanza wrote on his The Eyewall blog.

Hurricane Isaias made a Florida landfall earlier this month. There have also been eight tropical storms in the Atlantic this year. The next named storm would be Josephine.

Hurricane season ends Nov. 30.
