DENVER — A 32-year-old man was arrested after Colorado State Patrol troopers found a suspicious device designed to look like a bomb inside the state Capitol on Wednesday morning, agency officials said.

The Denver Police Department bomb squad responded to the building after troopers found the device on a windowsill near the east entrance, the state patrol said in a news release.

Troopers found the device at 10:34 a.m. and immediately secured the area and started going door to door to clear offices on the east side of the building, Trooper Sherri Mendez said.

The state patrol evacuated the rest of the building as a precaution at 11:12 a.m. The DPD bomb squad responded at 11:14 a.m., tested the device and found it was not a threat to the public, CSP officials said.

Lincoln Street and 14th Avenue were also closed during the emergency response.

Officers lifted the evacuation order and reopened the roads at 11:49 a.m.

Troopers arrested a man in connection with the case at 11:29 a.m. and transferred him to the custody of the Denver Police Department, the state patrol said.

CSP officials did not release the man’s name or say what charges he was arrested on and referred questions to Denver police.

The Denver Police Department did not immediately respond to an email seeking more information.
