FORT WORTH, Texas — “Yellowstone” star Luke Grimes is returning as Kayce Dutton in a new television show.

CBS announced this week that Grimes will star in “Y: Marshals” (working title), a “Yellowstone” spinoff that focuses on Kayce’s Navy SEAL background. Here’s a synopsis of the show:

“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

Kayce Dutton is back on TV

Grimes’ new show comes after “Yellowstone” wrapped its five-season run late last year.

In the Season 5 finale, Kayce was last seen working cattle with his wife and son on their family ranch. Given the synopsis for “Y: Marshals,” it appears that Kayce has moved on from the ranching life and is looking to get back into law enforcement.

It’s unclear whether any returning “Yellowstone” characters will be in the new series, such as Kayce’s wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) or son Tate (Brecken Merrill).

CBS did detail that “Yellowstone” co-creator Taylor Sheridan will serve as executive producer on “Y: Marshals,” although “SEAL Team” writer/producer Spencer Hudnut will serve as showrunner.

When will ‘Y: Marshals’ release on CBS?

“Y: Marshals” is on CBS’ 2025-2026 midseason slate, but a premiere date has not been revealed.

The series is expected to premiere sometime in spring 2026 and will air on Sundays in the 8-9 p.m. time slot. “Tracker” will lead the Kayce Dutton show in, followed by “Watson” after.
