NEW YORK — Uche Ojeh, husband of “Today” co-host Sheinelle Jones, has died following a battle with brain cancer. He was 45.

Jones’ co-hosts announced the “heartbreaking” news during Friday’s broadcast.

“With profound sadness, we share this morning that Uche Ojeh, the husband of our dear friend and ‘Today’ co-host Sheinelle Jones, has passed away after a brave battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma,” said Savannah Guthrie. “There are no words for the pain that we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children. Uche was an incredible person and we all loved him. And so we want to take a moment to tell you more about the remarkable man who was Sheinelle’s perfect partner.”

The NBC morning show shared a montage of the college sweethearts’ decades together and their relationship, which began at Northwestern University in the late 1990s. Jones was a freshman who showed the visiting high school senior around, per Today.

Jones and Ojeh, who married in 2007, share three children: son Kayin, 15, and 12-year-old twins, son Uche and daughter Clara.

Craig Melvin, who was close with Ojeh, said he “always talked about … those kids.

“He loved those kids more than anything else in this world,” said Melvin. “He was that dad that was on the sideline at every soccer game.”

Co-anchor Al Roker remembered Ojeh as “wickedly funny” and “very humble.”

Jones shared a portion of the tribute on Instagram, which she captioned: “Thank you, for all of your love and support.”

People reports that Jones had been absent from the morning show since late last year, a decade after she started at NBC.
