Jason Isaacs has admitted there is "no question" his drug addiction would have killed him if he hadn't got sober.

The 63-year-old actor marked 28 years of sobriety this week, and has told how he was living "without hope" until he turned his life around, but rather than "celebrating" his journey, the White Lotus star simply wanted to show others they are not "trapped" by similar choices.

He said: "28 years ago today, I woke up having spent the night without drugs. That was the first time that'd happened for decades. And I've lived a life that's drug- and drink-free since.

"I'm not saying that to celebrate myself at all, I'm saying it in case this ever reaches anybody who thinks they're trapped, who thinks there is no way to change their life."

"I've seen remarkable and extraordinary things. Just my own personal story, I was without any hope. No question I was going to die of and with drugs on and in me. I just wanted it to hurry up and happen. I couldn't quite make it happen myself fast enough and I was living a life without hope. And now I have a life with hope."

Jason stressed life isn't always "blissful" but he's grateful to be alive, largely because he was able to "surrender" control and ask for help, urging others to do the same.

He added: "So if you're in a dire situation, if you think there is no escape, I'm here to tell you that there is. Just ask.

"There's many ways to do it but you can change your life. So good luck and I give you all my love."

The Harry Potter actor - who has two daughters with wife Emma Hewitt - stressed in the caption to his post that people need the support and help of others to get sober.

He wrote: "My 28th sober birthday and, in some ways, still unbelievable to me. Sending so much love to everyone who took the time to love me back to life.

"To all of you who know that you're different, though, that you're terminally unique and that there are no solutions that will work for you…you're right: you can't do it. Not alone. Your best thinking got you where you are, so maybe it's time to ask for help. There are so many arms waiting to catch you. #sober #recovery.(sic)"
