Joe Battenfeld: Massachusetts Dems out of touch with Trump derangement fever

Massachusetts Democrats are so out of touch and infected with Trump derangement fever that they’re defending Iran and illegal immigrant gang members.
After U.S. missile strikes over the weekend against three Iranian nuclear sites, some lawmakers are questioning whether Iran was a nuclear threat – only because President Donald Trump ordered the strikes.
Even Democrats like former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Sen. John Fetterman found that assertion ridiculous and defended Trump’s decision, saying the U.S. had no choice but to attack and defend Israel.
“There’s going to be a lot of people in my party that are going to disagree with the strike in Iran and I actually support that,” Fetterman said. “I’ve always been calling for that thing. I think it was entirely appropriate.”
Fetterman also said he disagreed with Democrats who found the president’s action unconstitutional and grounds for impeachment.
“Just because sometimes it’s… a decision that President Trump did, it’s like maybe, reflexively, you have to be opposed to that,” Fetterman told Fox News. “For me, again, I’ve always been calling to destroy these nuclear facilities.”
Leon Panetta, Barack Obama’s defense secretary, said the U.S. “didn’t have any alternative” but to strike Iran.
“I think we have made very clear that the U.S. was not going to allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon,” Panetta said. “I think there was an effort to try to negotiate. The bottom line is that Iran wasn’t interested in negotiating and willing to do anything to stop their enrichment or bomb capability. I think the U.S. didn’t have any alternative but to conduct this type of attack.”
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been among those Democrats taking a hard line against Iran.
In a 2008 debate, Clinton said if Iran launched a nuclear strike on Israel “we would be able to totally obliterate them.”
In a 2015 speech, she also took a hard line position on Iran that shocked some Democrats.
“As president, I will take whatever actions are necessary to protect the United States and our allies,” she said. “I will not hesitate to take military action if Iran attempts to obtain a nuclear weapon.”
Several prominent Trump critics also praised the decision to strike Iran.
“It was a decisive action, it was the right thing to do,” former National Security Adviser John Bolton said. “I thought somebody should do it for a long time. But better late than never.”
The missile strikes and bombing of three Iranian nuclear sites could be a pivotal moment for Trump, who before this found his approval ratings sagging amid domestic flareups.
Former Republican lawmaker Adam Kinzinger, who the Democrats got to speak at their convention, called the U.S. attacks “the right call.”
But several prominent Massachusetts Democrats disagreed vociferously, with U.S. Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren calling the attacks unconstitutional because Trump did not get authorization from Congress.
“The American people do not want another endless war in the Middle East…Trump’s illegal actions raise the risk of escalation into a wider regional war with grave risks for U.S. troops and personnel and civilians in the region,” Markey said, demanding Trump begin ceasefire talks with Israel and Iran.
“This is a violation of the Constitution that is risking innocent lives,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley said. “Congress must act immediately to rein in Trump.”
Pressley and others even refuse to call Trump “President” and no doubt will move to start impeachment now. Some Democrats even went so far as to doubt Iran is trying to build nuclear bombs.
“Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to attack Iran is unauthorized and unconstitutional,” U.S. Rep. Katherine Clarks said.
Never mind that Iran is a dangerous threat to the U.S. and suppresses gay rights, women’s rights, and treats dissenters like criminals.
What message does it send to the world by defending Iran now?
