Yankees designate DJ LeMahieu for assignment

NEW YORK — One day after Yankees manager Aaron Boone declared DJ LeMahieu “a bat off the bench” and physically challenged by the third base position, the Yankees designated the two-time batting champ for assignment.
The team announced the decision on Wednesday. The Yankees still owe LeMahieu, 36, about $22 million.
On Tuesday, Boone said that LeMahieu took the news of his new bench role “not great, necessarily.” LeMahieu, lacking range at second base since returning from a calf strain, was moved off the position so that Jazz Chisholm Jr. could return to it after he struggled defensively at third.
Wednesday’s announcement marks a new low for LeMahieu after several years of injuries and declining production. Prior to his calf issue, he battled multiple foot and hip injuries.
LeMahieu, after playing for the Rockies over his first seven big league seasons, joined the Yankees as a free agent prior to the 2019 season. He signed a second deal with the team ahead of the 2021 season, re-upping for six years and $90 million.
