SAN FRANCISCO — The Pittsburgh Pirates secured their first road sweep of the season Wednesday afternoon, taking down the San Francisco Giants by a final score of 2-1 in 10 innings at Oracle Park. Isaac Mattson was the game’s winning pitcher, while Ryan Walker suffered the loss.

Giants first baseman Dominic Smith opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning, bringing home Heliot Ramos with a two-out single against Pirates starter Mike Burrows. Spencer Horwitz tied the contest at 1-1 in the following frame on a double that plated Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Horwitz, however, followed his big hit with a baserunning mistake that cost his club a run, as he was tagged out at third base in the following at-bat while trying to advance with no outs on a ground-ball hit to the shortstop. The Pirates stranded the bases loaded in that inning, which ended on a 1-2-3 double play from Nick Gonzales.

The game remained deadlocked until the top of the 10th inning, when Henry Davis plated Oneil Cruz on a fielder’s choice. The play started on a sharply hit ball to the mound. Walker fielded the ball cleanly and turned to second, looking to start an inning-ending double play. But Jack Suwinski was able to beat the throw to second, keeping the inning alive and allowing the run to score. The run was unearned, as Cruz started the frame on second base as the Pirates’ automatic runner.

San Francisco created some drama in the bottom half of the 10th, getting both the tying and winning runs in scoring position with only one out. Mattson, however, came through in the clutch, striking out Patrick Bailey and Ramos to secure the win.

It was over when ...

... Mattson closed the door with back-to-back strikeouts.

On the mound

Burrows more than held his own against Webb, one of the best pitchers in the National League. The rookie right-hander allowed just three hits over his six innings of one-run ball, walking one while striking out seven. The effort marked his second career quality start, with his first coming in his prior outing last week against the Diamondbacks.

At the plate

The Pirates had another day to forget at the plate, striking out 14 times, leaving 13 men on base and going 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

Most valuable player

Mattson, who earned his third win of the season after throwing two scoreless innings of relief.

Up next

The Pirates will have Thursday off before starting a three-game series over the weekend against the Rockies at Coors Field. The MLB trade deadline is set for 6 p.m. ET Thursday. First pitch for Friday’s series opener is scheduled for 8:10 p.m.
