PITTSBURGH — Jared Triolo has always been known best for what does in the field. But as of late, it’s his bat that seems to be making more noise.

Entering Saturday’s contest, Triolo was slashing .327/.400/.490 in his past 15 games. His success at the dish continued against the Rockies which paved the way for a 5-1 Pirates win at PNC Park.

Triolo’s big day started in the bottom of the third inning when he tagged Rockies starter Kyle Freeland, the game’s losing pitcher, for a two-run homer to left-center field. The long ball was preceded by a two-run blast from Andrew McCutchen the inning prior.

Two innings later, Triolo smashed a triple off the top of the wall in dead center field, his first of the season and second total in the major leagues. He came around to score later in the frame on a double from Bryan Reynolds.

The performance marked Triolo’s fifth multi-hit effort of the month. He is now batting .303 since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Aug. 1. While his season numbers are still less than desirable — hitting .205 with a .621 OPS — a successful finish for Triolo would be viewed as a win throughout the entire organization.

It was over when …

Triolo homered to left-center, scoring himself and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to give Pittsburgh a 4-0 lead. The long ball was his fourth of the season, traveling 404 feet at an exit velocity of 103 mph.

On the mound

Once again, the Pirates received a strong start from a rookie right-hander. This time it was Mike Burrows, who allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five batters over four scoreless innings.

Burrows then turned the ball over to Carmen Mlodzinski, the game’s winning pitcher, to start the fifth. Mlodzinski threw a pair of scoreless frames, striking out five of the seven batters he faced. Kyle Nicolas, Colin Holderman and Yohan Ramirez then finished the job, each throwing an inning of relief. Ramirez ruined the shutout effort in the top of the ninth inning, surrendering a two-out solo homer to Brenton Doyle.

At the plate

Triolo was far from the only Pirate to have a big day at the plate. As mentioned above, McCutchen got the party started with a two-run homer to left field in the second inning. The longball was his 12th of the season.

Kiner-Falefa and Alexander Canario both provided a multi-hit effort as well. In total, the Pirates tallied 11 hits, five more than the Rockies.

Most valuable player

Triolo, who finished 2 for 4 with a triple, a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Up next

The Pirates and Rockies will conclude their three game series Sunday at PNC Park. Paul Skenes (7-9, 2.16) is the projected starting pitcher for Pittsburgh. Colorado has yet to announce who will oppose the Pirates’ ace. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
