Queens priest defrocked over sexual abuse allegations dating to 1980s

NEW YORK — A Queens priest has been defrocked over sexual abuse allegations dating back more than two decades, according to church officials.
The Rev. Michael McHugh, a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Astoria, was removed from the ministry after members of a Catholic review board claimed they substantiated allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor.
“This news is disturbing and confusing to many,” The Most Rev. Robert Brennan, bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, wrote in a letter to the Astoria parish community.
“Often just having a place to speak about such matters is a beginning step to addressing the strong impact such news can have.”
Church officials did not detail the alleged transgression, only to say that it dates back to the 1980s.
Brennan said the decision to end McHugh’s ministry was based on the recommendation of the independent Diocesan Review Board, a panel of church lay people and a priest who review allegations of clerical abuse and misconduct.
McHugh’s removal does not mean that he is legally guilty of a crime, Brennan said.
He said the panel’s finding is a recognition of the seriousness of the allegations, and a necessary precaution meant to keep members of the church safe.
McHugh, 70, could not be reached for comment.
Under the guidelines of McHugh’s removal, he is not allowed to publicly celebrate Mass or exercise any public ministerial duties.
He also cannot live in a parochial residence.
McHugh’s name will also be added to the publicly available list of credibly accused clergy on the Diocese of Brooklyn website.
The decision to remove McHugh was announced in a letter read aloud to parishioners over the weekend.
“I encourage us all to stay vigilant in our commitment to protecting our children and youth,” Brennan said.
The bishop said the church received a report alleging sexual abuse of a minor during the 1980s.
He said the complaint was quickly handed over to the review board.
McHugh had been a vicar at the Astoria church since 2018.
McHugh was ordained in 1980. He has also served parishes in Flatbush, Jackson Heights and Long Island City.
