Skylar Diggins' late basket lifts Storm past Dream, 80-79

The Storm began their three-game road trip with an improbable 80-79 win against the Atlanta Dream at Gateway Center Arena on Thursday night.
Seattle trailed by a point with 11.4 seconds when coach Noelle Quinn called timeout to draw up one last play.
The Storm gave the ball to Skylar Diggins, who darted to her left around a screen and dashed to the rim where she scooped a layup over Dream forward Brionna Jones’ outstretched hands that bounced off the glass and rolled around the rim before falling in.
The game ended when Dream guard and former Storm standout Jordin Canada missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.
It was a record-setting night for Nneka Ogwumike, who scored a team-high 24 points and moved into seventh place on the WNBA all-time scoring with 6,815 points while passing Cappie Pondexter (6,811) and legendary Storm guard Sue Bird (6,803).
Erica Wheeler finished with 21 points while Gabby Williams and Diggins each had 11.
The Storm trailed 79-75 with 51.2 seconds before finishing the game with a 5-0 run that began with Wheeler’s 3-pointer.
The Dream’s offense was hampered without star forward Rhyne Howard, who scored 33 points in Atlanta’s 94-87 win against Seattle on May 30 and missed her first game of the season with an upper-body injury.
Williams, who is an early Defensive of the Year candidate, also effectively negated Dream leading scorer Allisha Gray and held her to 12 points on 3-for-13 shooting.
However, Canada torched her old team with a career-high 25 points while converting 7 of 15 field goals and 10 of 12 free throws.
Seattle’s road trip continues with Sunday’s matchup against the New York Liberty and concludes with a game versus the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday.
