Ukraine says its drones hit Russian anti-aircraft missile plant

Ukraine said its long-range drones hit a military plant on Tuesday that produces anti-aircraft systems in the Russian city of Izhevsk.
The Kupol facility in Russia’s Udmurtia Republic in the Volga region, more than 1,300 kilometers (808 miles) from the Ukrainian border, also makes attack drones, according to people in Kyiv familiar with the strike, who asked not to be identified discussing operational issues.
Udmurtia regional Governor Alexander Brechalov said on Telegram that three people were killed and 35 injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on a plant in Izhevsk that he didn’t identify.
Ukraine has targeted Russia’s defense industries with a campaign of drone strikes aiming to disrupt weapons production. That’s as Moscow’s forces have intensified air attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks, firing a record 537 missiles and drones at seven regions of the country on Sunday.
While Kyiv and Moscow resumed direct negotiations in May to try to reach a peace agreement, Russia has rejected U.S. and European calls for a ceasefire in the war that’s now in its fourth year.
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned Kupol in 2023 as “Russia’s leader in the production of anti-aircraft defense equipment” and said it was contracted to supply the Tor-M2 anti-aircraft missile system to the Russian military. The subsidiary of Russian defense manufacturer Almaz-Antey was involved in coordinating the production of drones at factories in China before transferring the weapons to Russia, according to the U.S.
